The sacraments are celebrated in the parishes. Please go to your own parish office first: the parish priest will explain what is needed and set the date. Requirements can differ slightly from parish to parish.
Baptism
Parents usually register the child at the parish office a few weeks ahead. The parish will ask for the child’s birth certificate and the names of the godparents, and parents and godparents normally attend a short pre-baptism seminar. Godparents should be practising Catholics who have received Confirmation.
Confirmation and First Communion
Children and young people are prepared through the parish catechetical programme. Ask the parish office when the next preparation begins.
Marriage
Couples should visit the parish of the bride or groom at least three months before the planned wedding. The parish will guide you through the canonical interview, the marriage preparation seminar, the publication of banns, and the documents you need, such as recent baptismal and confirmation certificates.
Anointing of the Sick
Call the parish office or the parish priest when someone is seriously ill or about to undergo major surgery. Do not wait until the last moment.
Certificates and records
Sacramental records are kept in the registers of the parish where the sacrament was celebrated. To request a baptismal, confirmation or marriage certificate, contact that parish and give the full name, the date (or year) of the sacrament and the names of the parents. For records that need the Bishop’s action, such as annotations or corrections, the parish will refer you to the Chancery.
