Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers about the sacraments, records and parish life.

Sacraments

How do I have my child baptised?

Go to your parish office a few weeks ahead to register. Bring the child’s birth certificate and the names of the godparents. Parents and godparents usually attend a short seminar before the baptism.

Who can be a godparent?

A godparent should be a Catholic who is at least sixteen years old, has received Confirmation and the Eucharist, and lives a life of faith. Ask your parish for its guidelines.

How early should we arrange a church wedding?

Visit the parish of the bride or the groom at least three months before the wedding. The parish will schedule the canonical interview and marriage preparation, and tell you which documents to bring.

How do I request a priest for a sick person?

Call the parish office or the parish priest as soon as someone becomes seriously ill. The priest will bring the Anointing of the Sick and Holy Communion.

Records & Certificates

Where do I get a baptismal or marriage certificate?

From the parish where the sacrament was celebrated, because that is where the register is kept. Give the full name, the date or year, and the names of the parents.

My parish records were lost or the details are wrong. What can I do?

Start at the parish office. Where a record needs to be restored or corrected, the parish will prepare the request and forward it to the Chancery for the Bishop’s action.

Parish Life

Where can I find Mass times?

See the Mass & Confession page. Schedules are posted as parishes confirm them; times may change on feast days, so it is always good to check with the parish.

How do I have a Mass offered for someone?

Ask at the parish office. See Mass Intentions for how it works.
