Catholics have long asked a priest to offer Mass for a particular intention: for the soul of someone who has died, in thanksgiving, for the sick, or for a special need. It is a way of uniting our prayer with the sacrifice of Christ.
How to request a Mass
- Go to the parish office of the church where you want the Mass offered.
- Give the intention and the name(s) to be remembered, and the preferred date and time.
- The office will record it and tell you when it will be announced.
About the offering
It is customary to give an offering, or stipend, when requesting a Mass. The amount is set by the diocese and the parish office will tell you. No one should ever be refused a Mass because they cannot give.
